Merle Van Roekel, 77, of Boyden, Iowa, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021, at his residence.
Memorial service was Friday, Sept. 10, at First Reformed Church, Boyden, with interment in Sheridan Township Cemetery, Boyden.
Merle Lee Van Roekel was born Sept. 8, 1943, at Boyden to Abe and Artie (Van Zee) Van Roekel. He attended school in Boyden and was a 1962 graduate of Boyden-Hull High School. He worked at Smit & Son Packing Plant in Boyden and served in the U.S. Army from 1965-1967.
On April 19, 1965, he married Virginia Hofstra. They lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Savannah, Illinois. After his discharge from the service, they returned to Boyden where he worked at Smit and Son. In 1978, he started Van Roekel Construction and worked as a carpenter until his retirement in 2005.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Brad (Lorinda) Van Roekel of Boyden and Les (Gwen) Van Roekel of Hull, Iowa; five grandchildren; brother, Norlan (Roxa) Van Roekel of Boyden; sister, Marla (Grant) Krahling of George, Iowa; niece and many extended relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
