Edward Bakker, 79, of Rock Valley, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 8, at Hull First Reformed Church with interment in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley, Iowa.
Edward Franklin Bakker was born April 1, 1942, in Le Mars, Iowa, son of Cornelius “Cornie” and Tillie (Koolhaas) Bakker. He graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull prior to attending Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, where he received a bachelor’s degree. Ed attended University of South Dakota in Vermillion and completed his master’s in secondary education. He began his teaching career in Humboldt, Iowa, alongside his then wife, Evelyn Te Slaa. In addition to teaching history classes, he was also a track coach. He taught in Humboldt from 1968-1975 before moving back to the family farm near Hull. He spent his later career years working as a custodian at Rock Valley High School. During his retirement years, he drove a delivery truck for Valley Bakery.
Survivors include three children, Shelley (Brent) Van Den Berg of Sioux Center, Ryan (Jaime) Bakker of Hull and Sheri (Jerod) Work of Sioux Center; seven grandchildren and a sister, Clarena (George) Drye of Bloomington, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his infant brother, Connie, and his parents.
