Three Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley softball players have been selected by the state of Iowa as Class 3A Northwest District softball players as voted on by members of the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union this past week.
The three players selected were pitcher Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag, shortstop Sammy Blum and third baseman Cassie Van Beek. Prior to the state tournament in Fort Dodge, Blum was the top hitter for the Nighthawks with a .495 average including a triple, a double, 50 hits, 46 runs and 35 runs driven in. Van Beek was the second-leading hitter with a .485 batting average with five home runs, one triple, 12 doubles, 47 hits, 50 runs scored and 37 driven in.
Van Der Zwaag has been a dual threat for Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley — both on the mound and in the batter’s box. Prior to the state tournament, she was one of the top pitchers in Class 3A with a 0.93 ERA, 289 strikeouts, an opponents’ batting average against of .154, only 27 walks and three hit batters in 195-2/3 innings pitched. With the bat, Van Der Zwaag was the third-leading hitter on the team with a .462 batting average, nine home runs, six doubles, eight runs and 49 runs driven in.
