Seven Nighthawks earn all-conference honors

After earning a third consecutive trip to the state tournament in Fort Dodge this past week, seven Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley softball players were picked as All-Siouxland Conference players as selected by conference coaches Tuesday, July 18.

Four of the seven players, Sammy Blum, Cassie Van Beek, Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag and Joanne Luevano, earned first-team honors. Van Beek was the top hitter for the Nighthawks, hitting .485 with five home runs, one triple, 13 doubles, 51 runs and 38 RBIs. Blum was the second-best hitter on the team, hitting .472 with one triple, one double, 48 runs and 36 RBIs. Luevano hit an even .400 with six home runs, seven doubles, 26 runs and 39 RBIs. Finally Van Der Zwaag was a dual threat both as a pitcher and as a hitter for Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. On the mound, she was the best hurler in the conference and in the state with 213-1/3 innings pitched with a 31-5 record, a 1.31 ERA, 307 strikeouts compared to only 37 walks and an opponents’ batting average against of .167.

Earning second-team honors were Alexis Mousel and Taylor Richter. Mousel hit for a .345 average with two triples, four doubles, three runs and 25 RBIs and was also the catcher for the Nighthawks. Richter hit for a .372 average with three home runs, seven doubles, 36 runs and 32 RBIs and played shortstop for Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley.

The final Nighthawk on the all-conference team was center fielder Brianna Brandt with honorable mention honors. As the flex player, Brandt did not hit in the lineup and therefore was picked for her defense. Brandt had a .826 fielding percentage with only four errors in center field this past season.
