Nighthawks overcome early deficit to advance to round two

BOYDEN-Class 3A eighth-ranked Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley fell behind 1-0 in the second inning but scored the final six runs of the game to defeat Sheldon 6-1 in a Class 3A Region 1 softball tournament game in Rock Valley Tuesday, July 3.

The Nighthawks scored three runs in the second inning. All three were scored with two outs. It started with a two-out double by Brooke Zylstra. Joanne Luevano then walked. Both Zylstra and Luevano scored on a two-run double by Morgan Halbur. Brianna Kleinwolterink then scored Halbur with a single.

“The bottom of our lineup started us offensively and kept us rolling tonight,” said Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley coach Sara Friedrichsen.

The Nighthawks then added two runs in the third and one run in the fifth inning. Overall on offense, Keely Swanson had a hit, one run scored and one RBI. Zylstra had two doubles and one run scored. Luevano had a hit, one run scored and two RBIs. Halbur had a double, one run scored and two RBIs. Kleinwolterink had a hit and an RBI. Taylor Richter had a single. Charli Bomgaars and Emma Zoet each scored a run.

“We executed well and were able to do some things we haven’t been able to do yet this season,” coach Friedrichsen said.

Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag was in the pitcher’s circle. She went seven innings, allowed two hits, one earned run, three walks and had nine strikeouts.

“Kaitlyn adjusted after Sheldon scored first and pitched a great game,” Friedrichsen said.

BOYDEN-Class 3A eighth-ranked Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley scored three runs in the fourth inning that helped defeat Sioux Center in a Class 3A Region 1 softball tournament semi-final Friday, July 6, in Boyden.

In that three-run fourth inning, scoring started on an RBI single by Lizzy Blum. Taylor Richter and Blum came around to score on errors later in the frame. Overall on offense, Richter drew two walks, had a stolen base and scored twice. Blum had a hit, two runs scored and an RBI. Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag had two hits, including a double and she drew a walk. Erika Pottebaum, Keely Swanson and Charli Bomgaars each had a single and an RBI. Brooke Zylstra and Morgan Halbur each added a hit. Emma Zoet and Jewel Bergstrom each scored.

“We were able to get our lead-off batter on base in four innings tonight and we scored all four of those innings. We hit the ball hard and put pressure on Sioux Center’s defense,” said Nighthawks’ coach Sara Friedrichsen.

Van Der Zwaag was in the pitcher’s circle. She went all seven innings, allowed five hits, one earned run, one walk and had five strikeouts.

Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley played 13th-ranked Spirit Lake in the Class 3A Region 1 final Monday, July 9, in Boyden.
