NEWTON-After having a tough time on the Westwood Golf Course in Newton for the first round of the Class 1A boys’ state golf tournament Thursday, May 24, Keaton Van Roekel of Boyden-Hull had a better time out Friday, May 25, for round two of the tournament and finished 25th overall as an individual.
After shooting a 44 and a 46 for a total of 90 the first 18 holes Thursday, Van Roekel came back Friday and shot a 44 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine for a second-round total of 86. Overall, Van Roekel finished with a two-day total of 176. Jacob Hesner of East Buchannan-Winthrop was the individual Class 1A champion with a two-round total of 147.
“Keaton played a little better Friday versus Thursday. I think it was more of a comfort of knowing the course. He just a had a few holes that he took a double bogey or a triple bogey and it is hard to come back from those type of scores,” said Boyden-Hull coach Brad Van Roekel. “He kept the ball in play much better.”
But the coach noted Westwood Golf Course is much different than the courses in northwest Iowa
“It was a tough course. Most courses we play you can just step up on par 4s and 5s and hit driver. That was not always the case at Newton,” the coach said. “That is why course knowledge really helps.”
However coach Van Roekel acknowledged Keaton Van Roekel for his four years playing on the Boyden-Hull boys’ golf team.
“I know Keaton did not finish quite as well as he would have liked, but he has had a really solid four years on the Boyden-Hull golf team. He is the only one who has every qualified for state as an individual and on a team. That is impressive for him to have done that,” coach Van Roekel said. “I loved coaching him. He works hard. I look forward to seeing what the future looks like for him golf-wise.”
