NEWTON-The Class 1A state golf meet at Westwood Golf Course in Newton Thursday, May 24, was new to Keaton Van Roekel of Boyden-Hull. As a result, Van Roekel found his first-round score at the state tournament a littler higher than what he would like.
Van Roekel shot a 44 on the first nine holes and finished the back nine with a 46 for a first-round total of 90, 19 shots over par and in a tie for 25th-place overall as an individual. The individual leader after round one was Jacob Hesner of East Buchanan-Winthrop with a score of 73, two strokes over par.
“Keaton shot a 90. That was higher than he was hoping, but the course played extremely tough,” said Comets’ coach Brad Van Roekel. “Scores in general were much higher than teams are used to. The course is nice, but very difficult to play with not having a practice round. Keaton had some issues with penalty strokes, so that hurt his score.”
However, the coach was still pleased to have at least one representative of the Boyden-Hull boys’ golf team at state and looks forward to Keaton Van Roekel having a better round Friday, May 25, after the early press deadline due to Memorial Day.
“No matter what you shoot it is still a great honor to be playing at the state tournament for your last round of the year. I think the second round will go much better since he will have a little experience. He will have a better idea of how fast the greens are and will know how far the ball will carry on certain holes,” coach Van Roekel said.
