Governor’s Volunteer Award

Anna Vierhout, daughter of Jim and Cheryl Vierhout of Hull, received the Governor’s Volunteer Award in Cedar Rapids July 30 for her work with AmeriCorps and Iowa Department of Public Health substance abuse prevention program. She is pictured between Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg and Gov. Kim Reynolds. She was chosen from thousands of volunteers throughout the state of Iowa for her hard work and dedication to the AmeriCorps organization. “I’m honored and grateful to have my work acknowledged but I hope the scope of the problems we’re facing as a country are further acknowledged as well,” she said. “Addiction can happen to anyone at any time. While the initial use may be their decision, no one can decide the way their brains and bodies react to a substance. Every single person’s life experience is unique, and fighting addiction is a lifelong process. I say all this to get to a very simple point — a little empathy goes a long way.” (Photo/Submitted)
