Gertrude Scholten, 93, of Sheldon, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at Sanford Senior Care, Sheldon.
Funeral service was Saturday, June 9, at Lyon County First Presbyterian Church, George, Iowa, with interment in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery, George.
Gertrude “Gert” Vander Kooi was born June 20, 1924, in Hull, Iowa, daughter of Benjamin and Theresa (Boogerd) Vander Kooi. She graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull in 1941. She worked as a telephone operator in Hull.
On Dec. 29, 1948, she married Gerald “Gene” Scholten. They farmed 60 years south of George. She was employed at Good Samaritan Center in George 16 years. In 2012, they moved into George. Her husband died in June 2013. She
moved to Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon in 2016.
Survivors include her children, Roger (Valerie) Scholten of Ruther Glen, Virginia, Janice (Randy) Huss of Ashton, Iowa, Gary (Lynette) Scholten of Brandon, South Dakota, and Ruth Scholten of Sheldon; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two brothers-in-law, Duane Buttenob of Aurelia, Iowa, and Leonard (Roberta) Scholten of Sioux Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, William (Grace) Vander Kooi and James (Velma) Vander Kooi; three sisters, Agnes (Wilfred) Wortman, Josie (Jake) Van Berkum and Sarah (Jake) Timmer, and seven in-laws from the Scholten family.
