HULL-Boyden-Hull played a tough two sets against Central Lyon in Siouxland Conference volleyball Thursday, Sept. 7, but the Comets could not dig themselves out of early holes in each set and were swept 25-21, 25-23, 25-16.

Boyden-Hull only lost the first game by 4 points, but coach Mel Hofmeyer noted her team did not give its full effort right away.

“First game we started out OK. A little slow, but we were able to keep up with them,” she said.

In the second game, the Comets were only defeated by 2 points, but Hofmeyer noted her team had to battle back the entire set.

“Second game we came back toward the end, but they finished it with a tip that we couldn’t pick up,” Hofmeyer said.

Final game, Boyden-Hull found itself down by as much as 17-10 to start the set and simply could not come all the way back.

“Third game we couldn’t get into a rhythm and Central Lyon just put it away,” Hofmeyer said. “We dug ourselves holes, so by the time we started playing well we had a decent score deficit. They were able to find some weak holes and we weren’t able to adjust by the end of the night.”

Joanne Luevano, who was back in the lineup after dealing with a leg injury, led the team with nine kills, Christina Boogerd had seven and Brooke Zylstra had seven. Audrey Kreun dished out 28 assists. Defensively, Boogerd plucked 11 digs. Brianna Kleinwolterink also had 11 digs, Erika Pottebaum had nine, Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag had eight, Zylstra had five, Kreun had three and Luevano had three.

On the service line, Kreun went 11-for-13 with two aces. Van Der Zwaag went 9-for-9 with three aces, Zylstra 11-for-12 with no aces, Pottebaum 4-for-6 with no aces and Kleinwolterink 4-for-7 with two aces.
