Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 4-2-0-0-4-X-X 10
Western Christian 0-0-0-0-0-X-X 0
HULL-Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley had the long ball working, while Western Christian could not get much offense going against Nighthawks’ starting pitcher Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag and Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley defeated the Wolfpack 10-0 in five innings.
The first home run came in the top of the first inning with Van Der Zwaag hitting a three-run shot as part of a four-run inning. The Nighthawks then scored two more runs in the top of the second, before three runs came off the bat of Erika Pottbaum with a home run on top of a solo shot from Taylor Richter in the fifth inning. Western Christian was unable to score in the bottom of the fifth to enforce the mercy rule.
For Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, Richter went 2-for-2 with three runs and one RBI. Brianna Kleinwolterink had two hits in two at-bats, three runs and one RBI. One of her hits was a double. Van Der Zwaag had one hit which was her three-run home run. Pottebaum went 3-for-4 with one run and four RBIs.
Van Der Zwaag threw all five innings with two hits, no runs, no walks and 12 strikeouts.
“Van Der Zwaag pitched another solid game, only giving up two hits. We stayed consistent with contact throughout the game and had timely hitting,” said Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley coach Sara Friedrichsen. “We still have to improve and are excited to see what can happen when we start executing in all areas of the game.”
The Wolfpack’s two hits came from Sydney Stiemsma and Alyssa Buren. Both hits were singles. In the pitcher’s circle, Buren went four innings with six hits, six runs of which five were earned, six walks and four strikeouts. Kayla Zevenbergen pitched the final inning with three hits, four runs that were all earned, two walks and no strikeouts.
“Didn’t feel like we were ready to play from the start of the game. Not sure the reason. Maybe the first home game? Missing three starters due to soccer? But no excuses,” said Western Christian coach Mike De Jong. “Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley is a great team and they were ready to play. They took it to us tonight. Getting down 4-0 in the first inning against a great team with arguably the best pitcher in the area is a very difficult task. We got down and never could get anything going.”
