On Monday, June 5, a babysitting basics clinic was offered to local youth from Boyden-Hull Community School, Hull Christian, Hull Protestant Reformed Christian School, Heritage Reformed Christian School, Rock Valley Community School, Rock Valley Christian and Netherlands Reformed Christian School. There were over 80 kids in attendance at Whispering Heights Senior Center on the Hegg Memorial Health Center campus in Rock Valley.
The clinics are offered annually, usually at the beginning of the summer in June for students who have completed fourth, fifth or sixth grades.
Stephanie Groeneweg RN and Brooke Rozeboom RN, both nurses at Hegg Medical Clinic, taught the two sessions. They covered topics on first aid, choking, making emergency plans and poison control. Age-appropriate activities were taught, along with basic infant and child care. Students also practiced basic CPR and learned how to change diapers and swaddle, burp and feed an infant.
At the end of the class, students were encouraged to take a short online test, which enabled them to receive their babysitting certificates.
