Al Mennega, 87, of Sioux Center, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at Royale Meadows Care Center, Sioux Center.
Funeral services were Friday, June 15, at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Sioux Center, with interment in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Sioux Center.
Aaldert “Al” Mennega was born July 3, 1930, in Assen, the Netherlands, son of Egbert and Grietje (van Dalen) Mennega. The family immigrated to the United States in 1950 and lived for a time in Cutlerville, Michigan. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1951, and served two years. Upon his return, he attended Calvin College to study biology.
On June 20, 1958, he married Elisabeth Vriend. He continued his education and received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. In 1964 he began teaching biology at Dordt College. He retired in 2000.
Survivors include his children, Yvonne (Dave) Thornton of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Ted Hoeksema of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Annette (Tom) Van Voorst of Maurice, Iowa, Rene (Derrick) Buggs of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Daniel Mennega of Austin, Texas, and Michelle (Dick) de Jong of Bodegraven, the Netherlands; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren as well as Vriend family in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; sister-in-law, Joan Mennega, and brother-in-law, Lyle Christensen.
